Ride and Handling
Up and onto the plane early, the 101 responds as soon as power 1s delivered, accelerating rapidly to an impressive cruising speed. Light and responsive underfoot the ride is sharp and exciting, providing you with a lot of controlled feedback without feeling the board is getting carried away. As the wind increases, the Carve can be pushed to even greater speeds, especially off the wind, becoming even more involving and captivating to sail. The footstraps and deckpads are excellent, providing plenty of control and support to make it comfortable for long periods of use. A true rider's board, its reactive energetic manner would be greatly appreciated by the expert rider who's looking for slalom-like performance but with enough control to confidently take it into any coastal environment. Much of this lively feedback is down to the high performance fin provided – a stiff pre-preg compression moulded blade that lifts the board high and allows it to release properly. As such, it is a little more susceptible to spinout should you get the balance wrong ... and once gone, you have to throttle right back to get it back in line. But then that is part of this board's charm and appeal, offering controlled and accessible performance that is sure to challenge and excite, whatever your sailing ability.
Manoeuvres
lmpressively versatile in the gybe, the 101 is easy to initiate into the turn and can cater for any rider style or level, from the nervous sailor learning to get round his first turn, to the experienced rider aiming to drive hard through a tight corner and come out faster than they went in. The rails grip to the inside of the turn beautifully, cutting through chop smoothly and holding their course irrespective of the extent of loading. Efficiently getting through the turn, the tail of the 101 is relatively thin however, providing less time and support for clumsy footwork upon exit. Similarly in the tack, the Carve feels its size, offering less stability than many in this group whilst shining round the front of the mast-foot.
For: Lively and exciting, offering a high performance, involving ride.
Aganist: More sensitivity and technique required in powered conditions to stop spinout.
Verdict
A true freeride board in every sense of the word, the Carve 101 comes recommended for high-octane straight-line work in any environment, combining performance with a level of control that will make it appeal to all abilities.
